Who We Are
Joel M. Thompson has practiced law in Montana for 24 years. He is a graduate of the University of Oregon School of Law, Class of 2000.
Founder, Joel M. Thompson, brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise, having served as a Deputy Cascade County Attorney in Great Falls from 2000-2010. During his tenure, he diligently prosecuted felony cases, including those involving sexual assault and homicides. In 2010, he accepted a position as an Assistant Attorney General in the Prosecution Services Bureau, traveling all over Montana and its many courts when smaller counties asked for assistance in serious and complicated criminal matters. As an Assistant Attorney General from 2010 -2017, he also trained prosecutors around the State on many subjects. He gained a state-wide reputation as a highly skilled and effective trial attorney, appearing on Dateline NBC twice, CourtTV, and in John Krakauer’s best-selling book, “Missoula: Rape and the Justice System in a College Town”. He has been the lead attorney in sexual assault and homicide cases all over Montana.
In 2018, Joel began criminal defense work with the Office of Public Defender in Billings, taking on a high-volume caseload of serious felony offenses. He was soon made supervising attorney of the Court of Limited Jurisdiction and then supervisor of all the District Court (felony) attorneys. He trained public defenders around the State on defending Sexual Assault cases.
